If you’ve been told you need cataract surgery, it’s natural to have questions. Will it hurt? How long does it take? What will your vision be like afterward?
The good news is that cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed eye procedures, and most patients can return home the same day.
Here’s what you can expect throughout the process.
Your Cataract Surgery Journey
Before Cataract Surgery
Your journey begins with a comprehensive eye examination. Your ophthalmologist will evaluate your cataracts, measure your eyes, and discuss your vision goals.
You’ll also choose an artificial lens implant, called an intraocular lens (IOL), to replace your cloudy natural lens.
Depending on your eye health and lifestyle, you may have options that can reduce your dependence on glasses after surgery.
Before your procedure, you’ll receive instructions about medications, eye drops, and how to prepare. You’ll also need to arrange for someone to drive you home.
During Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure.
Your eye will be numbed with medication to keep you comfortable. During the procedure, the surgeon removes your cloudy natural lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens.
The surgery itself often takes approximately 15–30 minutes, although you’ll spend additional time at the surgical facility before and after your procedure.
Most patients experience little or no pain during surgery.
After Cataract Surgery
You may notice blurry vision, mild irritation, or sensitivity to light immediately after surgery. These symptoms generally improve as your eye heals.
Many patients begin noticing clearer vision within the first few days, although complete healing takes longer.
You’ll use prescribed eye drops and attend follow-up appointments to make sure your eye is recovering properly.
Your doctor will also provide instructions about when you can resume driving, exercising, and other activities.

When Will My Vision Improve?
Everyone heals differently.
Some patients notice brighter colors and clearer vision almost immediately. Others experience gradual improvement over several days or weeks.
Your final vision will depend on factors such as your eye health, the lens implant selected, and whether other conditions affect your sight.
